Today is Tuesday, 4th October 2011 and 2 days after Oberon's return.

I cleaned up his flight room yesterday. I was too tired emotionally to do it when I returned to the apartment. During his time with me, he appeared so panicky that I refrained even from changing the newspapers that caught his pooping. I entered his flight room only to provide food and stuff for his foraging. Even so, that caused him to fly wildly and hide from me. Which lead to this course of actions.

There is loneliness now. There is sadness in me. The soft sad music from Taiwanese internet radio channel now being played is not helping me.

I originally felt what I have done was the best for him.
I am not too sure of that now.

Perhaps I should have turned my back on him in the cage at the bird shop and walked away 2 months ago.

Sunday was a grey day. It rained early in the morning which stopped later on with the sky remaining grey.

I went into the flight room and placed the mash in the little cage and left the room. Oberon went into the cage and I swiftly moved in and closed that door.

Last photo of Oberon still with me and in his cage.

My good friend Cyrus was driving us all to the release
With him as we walked out of the apartment. The cage was covered with a towel to minimize trauma to Oberon

And waiting with Oberon for Cyrus to drive his car from the carpark

We first drove to where I felt Oberon to be released. To a carpark next to the forest where fairy bluebirds have been seen by my bird watcher friend. I passed by this place on my cycle rides. Hardly anyone was around. I liked it that way. Or folks might think I was trying to capture a bird. Even worse, that might lead to them thinking they can capture birds there. It was a shock to me to see dozens of cars parked there. My cycle rides were all done during the week days. I never been there on Sunday before. I should be thankful that folks here liked enough of the wilderness to go there during the weekends.

We had to go to another place. A place known by Cyrus when he used to take his dog for a walk together with his son many years ago. As the crow flies, that was about 3 km away from where I wanted to release Oberon. And it was all part of the same forest. Further more, that area used to be a kampong (village) with farmers. That was all taken over and quite likely, the fruit trees of that abandoned kampong would be good for Oberon.

It was not good to stop off the side of the road. Joggers, walkers and cyclists were there even if rare. And as said, this was a private moment for all of us.

There was a turn off from that road leading to a closed gate of an army camp deep in that forest which became a cul de sac. And that was where we parked the car and prepare for Oberon release. My wife and Cyrus, with a camera each, took all the photos here.

Back into the realm of fairy queens.
And fairy kings.
And pythons.
And raptors.

And lots of food. Or maybe no food.

Might be a paradise. Or might be a hell.

Oberon was going to find out, for better or worse. No more wonderful Oberon Mash, and no more being frightened by my presence either.

The towel was removed. I let him be for a while first. To let him settle to new surroundings.

I turned the cage so the door faced the side of the forest.

And opened the door of the cage.

Oberon hesitated. I walked behind him to let my presence urged him on to freedom.

The edge of the forest was about 6 meters (20 feet) away.

In that escapade with Sieben, Oberon surprised me with a flight that zig zag through the living room, the dining room, twisted about in a corridor, through the kitchen and the laundry room. He was about to fly out of the house until brought down by Sieben chasing after him. That was a flight of about 24 meters or so. If he had not surprised me at how well he flown, turning about 3 corners and good flight control then, I would not have contemplated his release at all.

I thought Sieben would fly out of sight at the moment of release. Sieben instead flew just to the edge of the forest. and perched on a bush.

I waited a while thinking Oberon would fly off deeper. He remained there looking at me.
As if he realised that was the last he would see of me. And mash in a bowl would no longer be there for him.
As if he was reluctant for this to end.

I slowly moved to him thinking that would trigger his flight away.

He remained there even as my wife and Cyrus moved closer, perhaps just 3 meters away from him.

Edge of the forest was not a good place for him to be. I moved nearer to make him fly off. He flew another meter deeper inside. And then flew to the edge of the road.

I moved in rapidly. That triggered him to fly back deeper into the forest.
If he flown towards me, I would have taken him back.

This was sad. Even though I felt he should be released, I could not help feeling sorry it ended.

Perhaps Oberon will survive and find his fairy queen.

Perhaps not at all.

He would have to truly forage for food and insects and spiders.

I hoped Oberon build up enough fat reserves to tide him over the next few days.

Let us all wish him well in his return to the realm of the Fairy queens.

LiBai mash making.
About 300 grams of beef mince, with 200 grams of chicken mince and 150 grams of dried anchovies(for the calcium). That was all done up to the kitty mash formula I wrote about in

Instead of the almond and brazil nuts, about 100 grams of human grade groundnuts(peanuts) were used.
