Tinkerbell Legacy - Living with a flying parrot

Living life // That Li Bai // This Li Bai

News on the TV finally saw events in Japan displaced from the top spot.

Operation Odyssey Dawn started today by the coalition. Which included countries that send forces into Bahrain.

I stopped feeling happy about such events long time ago.

I remembered in my younger days being so happy on the American pull out from Vietnam from the demonstrations all around the world to that effect. To see later, among other events that came from the American pullout, which included the killing fields of Cambodia.

Then I was happy with the topple of the Shah of Iran to see later the rule of the Ayatollahs.

Happy originally to see the victories of Israel in the 6 day war to be followed by phosphorus bombs in Gaza on people living there in despair.

Israel so happy at the birth cry of Hamas, an entity that Israel mid-wifed into being.

The rout of Ruskies from Afghanistan to be followed by the Taliban and god knows what now or later.

I need not go on and on and on.

I just hope the people of Libya eventual peace and happiness and contentment, and the same for the rest of the world.

And may the problems of reactors in Japan remain as containable as declared by the authorities there. Life is tough enough in Japan coping with the earthquake and tsunami as it is.

That Li Bai

You have seen a few of his poems. Perhaps you like to see that man.

A portrait of Li Bai. I hope it was dated from his time, and not an artist impression

LiBai portrait

Chinese ink painting of Li Bai in toast to the moon and to his shadow to join him in enjoying the wine.

And somewhere in China, a statue as well, twice life size.

This Li Bai

I was unfair to Li Bai in my last report.

I should have known better as in my first few reports, I wrote that I had no idea what he was given to eat before except that I felt LiBai mash would be much better.

But seeing him eat and eat and eat worried me enough to weigh that mash as the scale never lie.

My original scale for Yingshiong accurate to 0.1 gram died. As expected after a lapse of 5 years, and my forgetting to remove the battery from that scale. The scale I bought was good to the gram.

Yet in that report, I thought I should continue to let him eat all he wanted much as it frightened me.

To see by the next day, he ate less. And even less by the next day.

To the point where today, Libai was satisfied with 16 grams of mash together with 16 grams of mango.

I like to think Li Bai was very under nourished when he came to me. When given LiBai mash, he ate and ate until his body recognised he had enough. Perhaps also the abundance of mash I gave him over the first few days reassured him he never need to worry about lack of food.

I was also happy in that his singing improved now. He hardly sang at the beginning. He kind of croak and cheep. While I did not expect shama type performances, what he gave in the first few days were hardly considered as singing.

He would fly to the swinging perch to eat that mash/mango. Maybe for 2-3 minutes.

Then he would fly back into his cage to preen and rest, followed by very soft singing, slowly getting louder. Then he would fly to the cage door and perch there for a while.

And then to the mash bowl to repeat.

He did not mind me or my wife being in the flight room with him. Even if we stood very close to him. He would take mealy worms when offered by hand. But extending hand to him would make him hop back a couple of inches.

No approach would be made to him in his cage that I unilaterally declared to be his absolute refuge.

There are very clear differences between him an omnivoure and Yingshiong the shama, an insectivore.

When Yingshiong was on the swinging perch, and provided the perch swing was not too great, Yingshiong head would appear to be absolutely fixed at a point in space. His body might sway on the swing, but his head was riveted and not moved a millimeter at all. If the swing of the perch was increased more than can be compensated, Yingshiong head would maintain absolutely on one plane.

LiBai head moved with his body on the swinging perch. None of those fixation of head at a point like Yingshiong. I guess thats because YS is a pure predator unlike Libai who is omnivoure.

Yingshiong was a much better flier, showing exquisite hovering skills and ability to dart about with rapid and sharp change in directions. Perhaps necessary for catching insects on the wing. LiBai who also eat fruits need not have the flying skill required by shama.

Photo taken with ambient light would show a kind of golden sheen at end of the feather.

Photo taken with flash showed his feather as brilliant green.

Now that I am satisfied with his well being, I will be starting on the next phase to bridge the gulf to his mind and hopefully his heart.

I also have clickers and target at home now.

Condtioniong the clicker will be the next stage.
