Tinkerbell Legacy - Living with a flying parrot

Rants //Staying home with Riamfada & back2room & sharp turning // Shedding

We saw Holland overcoming Brazil, Germany mastering Argentina 4-0. And Spain scraping past Portugal

I and the rest of the world also saw the most foul and nauseating display of the 'Hand of Dirt' as Uruguay Suarez stop Ghanian ball with his hands on the line. Is winning by all means , the dirtier the better, the way forward in life?

Suarez only got a red card for that display of dirt? That fairplay is totally irrelevant in life and in this world? Forget about skills and talent. Who cares about you can play as a team and how good you are in football. Just play as dirty and as foul as you possibly can. Losing with dignity is replaced by winning by all means.

Why not? We seen enough horrific wanton display of ruthlessness such as the killing and maiming of innocents at the Pakistani shrine of a Persian Sufi saint, Abul Hassan Ali Hajvery. Terrorists and Suarez have the same mindset.

That the ends justify the means.
That God, Saints and morality are totally irrelevant.

Is this the kind of world that we take pride and want to live in ?

We do not care to go places in the last few days even if I do not have to go to the office. With outside temperature in the high 30s to low 40s , with humidity of 85%, there are few places that we wish to go to.

So we stayed at home with the air cond running.

Riamfada spend a lot more time with me since I do not need to go to the office.

The foraging points that I created for her kept her nicely out of my hair much of the time. A few sunflower seeds, small pieces of almonds, brazil nuts and fruits kept her and us entertained as she flew about and climbed about on those perches foraging about. I also found out what those little jars with hole on the side were used for. Those jars are nesting jars, to be hung on trees and around the house for wild birds to nest in. So it is fitting I used them as foraging points for Riamfada.

Hanging down from new wobbly perch I made for Jabri. The wobbly perch is based on the 'basket' perch in Riamfada's room which I liked. That perch started off as a basket, until the basket was chewed to pieces whereby I hung a driftwood from the handle. The handle got chewed to pieces, and I substituted a piece of wood to suspend the lower driftwood. That was wobbly but Riamfada love that.

A new wobbly perch then was created, where the suspending rope on both ends were deliberately made longer to give claw/jaw hold for Riamfada to grip onto so she could beaked and bridge to center rope hanging foraging jar.

It worked as planned and Riam love the wobbly perch.

On new wobbly perch, specially designed to be very wobbly, foraging about.

Enjoying that Syrian pear

On ring perch. The foraging jar under a chewed branch. The branch was 3 times as long when it started if you checked back on earlier photos. But the branch got chewed and chewed to current length.

Is there an almond? Sunflower seeds? Fruits?

Any snacks here?

That hovering display over my shoulder as described in report http://shanlung.livejournal.com/116336.html was not seen again from Riamfada.

It was a very easy relationship. She stayed on her places, foraged about, fly to my shoulder for a while and flew back to her perches. Sometimes asked by me, sometimes all on her own. Should I walked past her on way to kitchen, or to the loo, or to look for book , she would fly to my shoulder to join me just to see what I was doing.

Should I watch the TV, she would fly over to my shoulder, hopped to back of sofa and preened there, or jaw and claw her way down my body onto my lap and got her headrubs.

Things were not always so idyllic and peaceful. When she was extra feisty, going to sofa without me to chew on TV remote control or on a pack of ciggie, I get her to step up on hand perch and send her flying to other perches to forage or play on. Or I would give her a shower. Then she would fly from perch to bar, and back again ,often using me as intermediate stop. As she was drying out out, I would get an hour or so of relative peace.

drying out after a shower.

Though from time to time, she had to be kept in her room for me to take a break from her, such as writing this journal now, or playing chess in
playchess.com I lose chess well enough on my own without Riamfada helping me to lose even more games. Especially when games are played on one minute or 2 minutes 'win inside that time or you lose'. And having to spend a couple of seconds to rescue tv remote controls or ciggies can be the last straw and sure way to lose a game.

Been kept in her own room is not feared by Riamfada. She would fly back into her room when I asked her as you can see in this video. I gave her a hand, but I could take video of her flying back on her own when cued.

Riamfada would fly to places when I cued her to do so. To the perch, to the bar, to the ring etc.

One place she refused to fly to is mummy even if she would step up for mommy. At least she stop biting mummy other than that nip she gave mummy in intense irritation at me for not snuggling and head rubbing her prior to taking her to her room for goodnight.

I did not repeat that mistake. No matter how tired or lazy I felt after evening out with her and wife, I would make sure she got her headrub prior to sending her to bed. I would be calling out ' goodnight, goodnight' repeatedly while walking to her room with her on handperch. Mommy would join in wishing her 'goodnight goodnight' while waiting just outside her door.

A few nights ago, I felt it was 'safe' for my wife to offer her finger for beakrubs as part of that goodnight ritual. To my intense shock and dismay, Riam lunged for the finger despite my feeling it was safe. I shouted Bad Girl! My wife quickly said it was ok. Riam was doing another parroty joke. She lunged at the finger, closed her jaws on the finger, and quickly released without biting.

My feeling was right. But the shock was still terrifying. Parroty jokes are not for faint hearted.

While Riam did not fly to my wife, she accepted mummy as a kind of object to do a roundabout come on. What roundabout come was introduced below

Dubai trip //Ivan & Batty // Roundabout come.

Except this time the roundabout come was mummy, even if she refused to land on her.

Video tell it better

Neighbourhood walks are almost a daily fixture. In the evening when the sun is down, it became cooler. 34C is a lot better than the 38-44C during the day.

That’s when we all go out for a walk, almost a ritual.

Kitties on my wife’s car parked outside the villa

My wife managed to capture a sharp turn landing made by Riamfada instead of that big lazy loop that you have seen in last report. Not exactly the ‘turn on a dime’, but close enough to that. You would get the idea how she turned in air to land facing the direction she came from.

Sequence starting here in last 4 shots of
and on to

This is one of the best sequential shots taken of Riamfada

There are other sequential shots at the villa across the road. Zoom in of Riam in flight as she made that corner hide and seek recalls to me. You see kitties crossing the road and not turned into pancakes so far. We all must be well known to cars there to beware of family with parrot and 2 crazy kitties and to slow down for them.

Check them out here

I do like this shot. Even if only Dommie was on my wife's car and Riam on point of landing on me

With the Fifa 2010 on, and some games played at 6pm local time, the walks took 2nd priority. I and my wife would drive to the outdoor restaurant 5 minutes away to have dinner and watch the games there. Dommie felt betrayed when he saw us in the car with Riamfada. He would jump into the car. He would evade me to jump to the boot, and when I opened the boot, he went to the back seat and tried to hide under the driver seat. He was eventually evicted and we drove out. I was kind of sad we could not take him with us. Dom could not understand there were too many people there and he would be bullied.

Here is me and Riamfada on 2nd July watching that Holland Brazil match. When it got darker, the match would be on that bigger screen.

The game had not started yet. Later on, all the seats would be taken.

Riam was more interested in the cucumber slices

And in chewing up the paper cup after we had our fruit juice than in the quarter final between Netherlands and Brazil

Shedding of ties

While I have more time now with Riamfada, I must prepare her and myself for that final handover. I must go into shedding of the ties, for her and for my own good.
That she be less reliant on me, and me on her. To try to cling on to her for the time left is not good for her and not good for me.

I and my wife had made that holiday plans earlier. Even if I could get my money back, or even if I had not made those holiday plans earlier, I would have made the plans now that I know I be leaving Oman by end Sept this year or 3 months time.

I cannot leave her abruptly. I would have to leave her in stages. It started early this year where from time to time, Riam was left with Jabris. Each time longer and longer. This time will be for 16 days with the Jabri family, her designated caregivers. It would be difficult for me to stay at home with the reminders of Riamfada. Then any problems that might arise between Riamfada and Jabris can have me to resolve them for even better relationship between Riam and the Jabris.

To get through that couple of weeks, it would have been the best for me to go on that holiday. Riamfada would be loved and well looked after by the Jabris. Except now that would have an added poinancy as part of that handover plan.

On Tuesday evening, we will take Riamfada to the Jabri together with cage, bar perch, wobbly perch and ring perch with enough mash for that 16 days that she will be there.

That holiday in Amsterdam and Copenhagen will be looked forward to by us , to smell roses again, and to come to terms not just with parting of Riamfada, with the parting with our cats later on as well.

I knew we were here in Oman on borrowed time since the end of last year. Ever since early this year, I expected I have to leave Oman and all my creatures here. If you have not known about all that and wondered why I cannot take Riamfada with me, please read the following.

Riamfada foraging // 3 days 2 nights at Wadi Bani Awf and ending of this chapter

Closing this chapter//Buwah off Harban with Dommie// Beautiful Wadi Qurai

Dedication // Raining curses on Katie at Al Felaij Dam // Riam in cage at Jabri

It is painful enough for me as it is. So please read or re-read above before you write to me wondering why I have to leave them. Please do not make it even more painful for me to reply and tell you things I have said above because you had not read that.

For those that through no fault of their own, or otherwise, and had to part painfully and unwillingly from their beastie or birdies, whether in the past, or the present, or in the future, I dedicate the saga of Riamfada that I had wrote , and continue to write to that final handover , to you all.
