Tinkerbell Legacy - Living with a flying parrot

Still experimenting with free feeding of YS
shanlung
.

I was up earlier today and opened the sliding door before I went to get my breakfast. When I took the breakfast to the TV at 8am, Joy was there and excitedly told me she got YS weighed. She had to bribe her with 10 millis to know YS was at 33.3 gm.

What else to do at that news but for me to eat my breakfast, have my coffee and watched the news while YS was on the fan watching me. At 815am, YS announced to me I was lazy by flying and going 'channg' yet again at me. After he did that 3 times, I went in.

YSM was at 38.4 gm or .5 less // milli at 20.8 // suri at 70.4 //

YS then flew over to the scale to tip it at 33.3 gm. He got 1 milli. I could not figure how Joy took 10 millis and I was not about to ask.

We went inside. Against expectations as YS was heavy, YS performed very very well. Flying to me at cue for recalls for a milli or two. If he did not preempt my calls, his reactions were just spot on perfect.

At 830 am when that was called to a halt by me, the milli was at 19.7 gm. YS fly into the kitchen to brood. Not that I minded as I then set up the box of millis for him to freely take from.

That was 54.6 gm of millis in bran substrate. Not much substrate if you are wondering. I called YS, who eventually came to me to see what it was all about. I pointed to that free feeding box on the table, not that I needed to point that to him. He noticed that and flew and perched on the edge to take at them.

By 1010am, that was down to 52.8 gm. YS refused to go to the scale and thus , only the millis could be weighed.

I was watching TV to be joined by him later on the fan. Then he started flying over my head to channg himself. I thought he was signalling to me as before and was pleased. But this time, he refused to heed my calls. He continued to do that as if to amuse himself.

He did join me in the PC room later. If he did not care to fly to me, I was ready to go to him even if just to twirl my finger to get him to sing and dance at me. Nice as it was to have him to fly to me, that wasnt a key criteria in my companionship with him. He was comfortable, very comfortable with me. That to me was the main criteria.

It was only at 1 pm when I had to keep him in flight room that he allowed himself to be weighed at 33.9 gm // milli at 19.5 // that big box of milli was 51.2

I was out for lunch and much of the afternoon.

I got back at 6 . The YSM was at 38.3 gm . He did not take much, but it was still very interesting that he still took some of the YSM. Using a small suri, I enticed him on the scale to show 35.5 gm. I was stunned to see the big milli box contained 45.1 gm. He ate 9.5 gm of millis.

He flew to the fan while I remained in the flight room reading a book. Then I heard him going 'channg' again, and again. I ignored that as he did not care to fly to me and I thought he was just haveing fun. But that was done too often. So I went to the sofa and tried a recall. I was so surprised that he responded immediatly. I did not expect him to do that at 35.5 gm

He did very well for all the recalls from short to the long.

At the final weighing at 7 pm, he was already up to 36.0 nd the milli at 18.8 gm.

I had no problem in allowing him to take on demand the millis set out for him. But I have problem in that I was unhappy that his weight was so high. That could not be healthy for him in the long run.

To keep his weight deliberately very low to get him to give the correct response is not very nice to him and a mockery of equality I wanted with him. But free feeding to such high weight is not natural either.

I need to think more as to what kind of solution that I can be satisfied with.

I weighed in enough YSM to tip scale at 38.6
