Tinkerbell Legacy - Living with a flying parrot

YS kept insulting my wife
shanlung
.

It was a bit later today when I got up. YS came in and eventually, I was watching TV and finishing my breakfast. I got to say YS was polite and waited. But When he saw I finished and was just lounging and watching TV, he started to remind me of his prescence. By flying from the fan to behind me and launching himself on the cabinet straight ahead of me. Out of perversness, I left him did that three times before I did some recalls with him. Then I got that notebook and walked into his flight room while he watched me from the fan.

1015 am

YSM was 380 // YS saw it was his turn and flew onto the scale to be 31.5 gm. Milli was at 23.1 and nice succulent suris at 71.1

It was then fun time with him doing very good recalls for his millis. He preempted those intermediates and long recalls by following me and hovering in front until I raised my hand and gave recalls.

With him on the light in living room and me in the corridor, I tried to do a 1/2 hs recall. I moved in sight of him with suri on tweezer to have him immediately taking off towards me. I moved back out of his sight and called. He turned the corner into corridor and came onto my finger for his suri. I tossed him back and he flew round the corridor. I called him and got him to turn that corner back to me for another suri.

Then I was in the PC room and he followed me inside. Being left alone for some time, he flew out on his own.

I came out later, Joy joined us and I showed her how good his response was. She insisted on trying again so I handed her the milli box. YS looked disgusted and flew back from her to the fan. Joy walked to him holding the millis but was given the cut royal when YS snubbed poor Joy by flying to his perch door. When Joy walked to him, YS flew into the cage.

I told Joy to sit on the armchair and in time YS was out on the cage door. She tried the recall holding the milli box. YS just refused to respond to him even though she was holding the milli box to entice him. I, still seating on the sofa, called ' Yingshiong!' and he turned his head immediately to me. At the raise of my hand and 'come here', he flew to me. He knew very well I did not have the milli box. After a few seconds on my hand he flew back to the door perch to add salt to injury of my poor wife. There he stood ignoring my wife and her attempts at recall. She asked me to try again. I did that and was surprised that YS responded so well to me yet again even though it was clear he would not get anything from me. Then I tried that again a third time. With YS flying to me.

What can I say. He knew the millis were with Joy. Yet he responded to me even though clearly he was not getting treats.

At 1130, YS was at 32.6 with the millis at 21.9 and the suris at 70.4 gm

He was locked into the flight room and Ivan came out and me and my wife went to town. I decided that my PC bought 5 years ago and state of the art then was getting too pathetic. I finally decided to get a new Acer Travelmate 3280. So I least I can listen to my recordings of YS songs. I can even get to see the photos I taken of Tinkerbell as clearly as you all. The views of the photos on flickr were very pathetic compared to what I seen in everyone else computer.

We got back eventually at 6 pm. I was feeling guilty at not leaving food for YS until I saw that I left the milli box in the flight room. Of course, YS overturned that and had a feast on the escaping millis. YS was at 32.2 and the millis at 18.6 gm so you could imagine what a banquet he got.

Still, I got him two big succulent crickets at about .8 grams each.

Then at 7 pm, YS was at 32.7 with milli at 18.4

I weighed in 38.7 of YSM and placed that in after he slept.

More conversation with Benjamin // dunno if I gotten a HS recall // mode of crashing on the glass

Hi uncle Shanlung!

Again, i am being fed by yr knowledge. I'll probably become a fat with knowlege as i digest and if this continues, but knowing it makes me wanna share with others and thats how i grow fit.

And concerning your question, i believe a male shama in top breeding condition will sing and perform most of the day. from the website shama.com.sg, it mentioned that a bird out of breeding condition will sing sporadically and indifferently because it may be lacking a hormone named testosterone and therefore unable to break into song. So i suggest that Yingshiong is in breeding condition.

for me my birds sing almost like yours. one of my birds named "Water" because of his watery voice just started to sing two weeks ago because its moulting just ceased and is now growing its tail feathers which presently measures 7.5 inches. Till date i believe his loudness and variety in song has increased compared to weeks before even before his tails emmerged. i hope i shared something useful. thks

Hi Benjamin,

Water is a good name for your shama.

First of all, I am a student still, of birds and of life. There will be no end of learning for me, from you, from questions asked, and from all others. So you see, I am very happy to learn all I can from you. My learning can end when I do really go.

Do take a reality check. My experience on shama is about 4 months on a single shama. I believe you have kept shamaS for a longer time than me. All others reading our conversations must have kept maybe 4-6 shamas for periods of years or decades.

I am a novice, and as such, my words need to be considered against your own experiences and others. Not all I say may be correct. After all, on simple stuff such as shama singing competition, I did not even realised that those competition take place at night in a recent thread. I tried to replicate living for my shama as close to nature as possible, and when darkness come, he go to sleep :-)

I do have ideas somewhat different from others. I am happy that Taufik gifted me the shama, rejecting big $$$ from others to do so, allowing me to test those ideas I had.

I am of course happy that my thoughts have be shown to be true, that even shamas can be companion birds and not just aviary or song birds.

My earlier rocky path with shama have been made so much easier with the knowledge and support from Guru David who was so open with his expertise to me.

In the past, from books and papers I read, it seemed that bird singing is territorial to demarcate their borders of control and for breeding. In full territorial mode singing, I believe that is indeed the case.

But what if the singing is very very soft or soft. I believe than the bird is happy, at peace and singing to express that feeling. After all, those soft singing could not have been territorial posturing to challenge other shamas.

There is also a danger in thinking the concept that 'shama in top breeding condition will sing and perform most of the day'.

You may get to think that if the shama do not sing, he is not in top breeding condition and you just stop at that. That implied that why he is not in top breeding condition, he is still in an OK condition.

I rather hold on to the concept that if a bird is in top health condition, in diet and in opportunity to exercise his lungs and air-sacs by flying, and is in great mental health, that bird will sing and perform most of the day.

So if my bird do not sing, I will not just think that he is not in breeding condition. I will think that he is not in the top of health. I will then take measures to try to make him healthy and happy again.

I could be wrong. As I said in earlier part of letter, I am a novice.

YS was let in and I got and had my breakfast. I perversely watched the news on the TV until he showed his irritation by flying over and from overhead, kept launching himself to the cabinet shelf. He is training me too.

So I got into the flight room at 945am.

YSM was at 38.2, .5 gm drop// milli at 23.8//YS 32.3

He was extremely alert to all the recall cues. While a lower morning weight might make some difference, it really did not make that much of a difference. At longer range, he would come before being called, hovered nicely in front of me until my hand was raised and cue given. The other day incident with my wife was really revealing. You recalled she had the milli and was offering it to him. He knew that Joy would gladly let him have HIMB if he ever go to her. He saw I aint got any millis, and yet 3 times, he ignored Joy to land on me.

He might like milli, but it did not seem to be all that motivate him.

As I walked to kitchen door , he flew to me, circled and flew back to the fan. And at my cue, he flew to me again to get his millis. I had faded out the clicker for a few days. After a few more recalls, I left him on the dining area chair after giving him a backrub. I told him to go and do his thing. Almost as if he understood me, he flew off into the kitchen.

I went into the flight area to harvest suris and millis from the trap I set. It was still an astonishing amount of suris in the smb3. After I took enough for the day // suri at 732// I transfered the balance into smb2 which seemed to be running low. Smb2 was then put into R&R and smb1 back into service.

By then, YS was on the fan watching me. I gave him a recall to let him have a suri.

I then went to the PC room. I was still using my old PC. I am too much a creature of habit and did not touch my Acer notebook yet. I then heard YS calling in the dining area. I returned his call and called 'come here'.

I was surprised and not prepared when he flew in and perched on the chair beside me. I quickly raised my hand and hold the milli box in readiness and thought that was a clear hide and seek recall where he came to me around two corners when called. To my surprise, he did not fly that 3 feet to my hand and his rightful reward. He chair chair chair at me and took off to fly around my head and than onto the fan behind me to preen himself.

I am not trying to be difficult. But again, he confused me as to whether that could be considered by me as an authentic HS recall. If he came to my hand and took the reward, then I would definately considered that as a HS recall. But he didn't. You have seen how mercenary he could be. So perhaps he was just naturally coming into the PC room when I called him.

But in a while, he was ready again to fly to me on recalls. He got suris and millis. Then he felt bored with me and disappeared into the bedroom to sing. When I went over , he came very readily to me on recall to get his suris and millis.

At 1230pm, YS was at 32.7 // milli 21.9 // suri at 72.6

It was time for changeover, YS went in and Ivan came out , and I went for my lunch.

I got back and did my thing for a while. Then Ivan got incarcerated again and I was in the living room watching TV while YS perched on the cage door perch and looked silently at me. His gaze was getting discomforting to me together with his silence. So at 3 pm, the sliding door was opened and he flew in perching himself on the S hook of the bamboo bird cage by the TV.

He then started to sing and sing very softly.

Now, his state of physical health inside the flight room just before he was allowed in must have been the same as after he came in.

He was not singing, and he sang only after I let him in to join me.

So could I say his state of mental health, his happiness changed and as a result, he then sang. Those soft songs were obviously not territorial. Or maybe he just sang because he wanted to sing.

You have seen the exchange I have had today with Bejamin of http://www.pets.com.sg/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=9

In the past, I thought that bird singing was totally territorial. But it was clear that YS soft singing was not territorial and I termed that as happiness singing. I just did a google search and found this

http://www.earthlife.net/birds/song.html

I was rather pleased that they felt birds do have 'pleasure' songs too.

We did more recalls after he showed me he wanted those recalls but his overflight of me and crashing into the glass panel of the cabinet right in front of me. Quite a charming sound when he crash on the glass panel, a very light 'c h a n n g ', then he slid slowly down, and then he hovered and elevate himself to the top of the cabinet, and then he flew to behind me, and then he flew bisecting my field of vision to crash again onto that glass panel.
YS did not crash into the glass plane with his head in case you are worried. He seemed to crash onto the glass with his feet up. I tried to take photos of that, but my camera, or my reactions were just too slow, but I would keep on trying :-)

Eventually, I went to the PC room to be joined by him later. A few recalls were done, and twirling of fingers that he seemed to like as he would then go into his very soft happiness songs.

At 615, it was time for him to go back to flight room.

YS was at 32.8 // milli at 20.3 // suri at 71.7

YSM was weighed at 38.5 and inserted after YS slept
