MERRY CHRISTMAS AND HAPPY NEW YEAR TO ALL
I first should clarify what I wrote in last report that I did about 5-6 sessions of clicker training of about a minute each time. Those were formal sessions. I spend more than 5-6 minutes of my time each day with Jackie. I might be reading a book in his room. I might go in just to stand in front of him to talk to him, and to get him used to my presence and going in and out of the room. I might just stand to gaze at him. I might just hold up pieces of bread to see him doing flying snatches at the treat. How much time I spend with him I do not really know or tracked. I have my life to live too, and cycling and swimming that took me out of the apartment. And tv and Internet and chess.
In last report, you read of Jackie graduation and his reluctance to accept his scroll.
Now, one thing about graduation, that is nothing but a point in time. To those graduating, that might meant a lot to them. But to the rest of us, the graduation is nothing but the start of a different journey. I recalled when I got my black belt. Later to find that was just the beginning. And only later and much wiser, decided to discard that belt as I learned more. In the same way, getting Jackie to stand on me on cue, and to touch target was step 2 on that bridge of trust we need to build. That was not the end all, only the start of the beginning.
Both of us learned our ABC. There is still the rest of the alphabet to go. And the sentences and chapters that still lie ahead of us. But without that ABC, we never can go on the rest of that journey together. My main intention is on bonding and getting Jackie to trust me fully. I am too laid back to go into training of tricks for Jackie. Nothing wrong at all in tricks training as that is still good for bonding. That required a lot more discipline that I am not inclined into, and the creation of props and clear table space which can be horrendous a task for me.
But first, the photos of us doing that ABC together.
That come cue and treat.
Photos had been taken of the touch target. But I do think video will show that much better.
It was not just static touch target. Jackie bend down, twisted to the side, reached up etc etc to touch target. On top of that, Jackie had to hop down from the table to the weighing scale to touch target. Jackie had to hop from top of the cage to the cage door , and down that cage door to touch target. I thought videos were taken of that. But I guessed that was not done, at least by the time of this report. And rather than to wait for my wife to get back to do that, I send off this report the way it was.
In addition to those ABCs, Jackie needed to get used to flying into the living room.
Which was encouraged to Jackie by nothing more then sheer greed. Together with that budding trust he had in me. I started slow, from the arm chair just next to the door. Then I moved to the sofa in front of the TV. Just to get him flying into the living room. I hold up a tiny piece of bread to encourage him to fly in.
These photos were taken on last Sunday. With him now prepared to fly in to snatch the bread, I moved on to giving him COME cues for him to fly to my hand.
In my infallible wisdom and renowned foresight, I decided on an angle of shot to be taken by my wife. I told my wife to stand behind the sliding door to shoot Jackie from that angle.
This was that shot.
Now, you all know Jackie is not enamoured with my wife as yet. My wife going into his flight room would agitate Jackie into flight spasms before settling down. That flash startled Jackie. The sight of my wife suddenly seen when he was flying back and together with the flash from the camera shifted Jackie into a flight path I had not thought of with my famous foresight, still as faulty as ever.
Jackie shot off behind me. I knew my apartment was made safe as I told you all a month ago. That window opened to Libai was meshed over.
Then I suddenly remembered Sieben, that horrid energetic Aby one year old. Any kitty one year old will be energetic enough. But an Aby on top of that can be left to your imagination. I had tried to make Sieben into a lap cat. Which was done as you have seen. Except Sieben was a lap cat only when he wanted to be a lap cat. He could not be hold down. I bought a choke chain to try to hold him down so he could be brought into Jackie's flight room the way you seen with Ivan my old tabby. To get Sieben used to Jackie and to accept Jackie. Sieben twisting away from the choke chain and to the point almost of pulling his head off his body. I thought of making a Tinkerbell Harness for Sieben. But my procrastination got into the way. And also a background thought that might be futile, but again, procrastinating has a wonderful way of conjuring up excuses. But one thing about Sieben. No matter how much he objected violently to my ideas, he never laid a needle sharp claw on my skin yet or sunk a needle sharp tooth into my flesh. No matter how he flung his paws and claws about in frenzy, he never drew blood from me. Maybe Sieben was just bluffing.
He might knock down stuff from table and top of cupboard where he decided was his place to lay on. He might deafened me by head butting me giving me concussion and purring right into my ear. He never drew blood deliberately or accidently from me.
But he was not safe with Jackie.
With Jackie and myself in the living room, I knew a shout I hurled would make Sieben back off and be safe enough.
And Jackie was flying deep into the apartment.
Even if he could not fly out, Sieben was somewhere in the apartment. For all I knew, Sieben might be gwai gwai shi shi in a corner watching it all.
I rushed to follow Jackie. I ran to the corridor to see Jackie turning right and flying into the spare room on top of a bed used for sorting dried clothing.
With a blur of grey on the floor. I could not even shout in that split second.
Then a blur of strips moved on the bed. And collided just when I could hurl a shout. That shout dropped the grey to the ground sneaking under the bed.
By then I was in the room. Sieben was no longer in sight. Jackie was on the edge of the bed next to the wall. And Ivan was on that bed. Perhaps both the cats saw Jackie flew in. Perhaps both the cats collided in the rush to Jackie.
Or perhaps Ivan knew Jackie was family and Ivan reflexes was to intercept Sieben before my shout. You knew of Ivan rescueing that baby bat when we were in Hongkong.
(see Dubai trip //Ivan & Batty // Roundabout come. http://shanlung.livejournal.com/105465.html )
I really did not know.
Jackie on the bed in that spare room
Ivan looking on. I could not chase Ivan away after what I have seen, or think I have seen.
I gave recall cue to Jackie. In that new and strange environment, Jackie did not recall to me as I thought so. I also felt that even if Jackie did, in the walk back to the living room and through the corridor would be too much to expect Jackie to stay on my hand.
I think this was the first time ever for me I toweled a birdie. The situation called for this and no apologies to Jackie or anyone else.
With a pillow case.
Jackie squawrking away in the pillow case.
In the living room, I released Jackie for him to fly back into his flight room.
I thought with that fiasco, I blown the trust I worked so hard to gain with Jackie.
But to my surprise, just ten minutes later, he was happily flying to my hand on cue and touching target as if nothing had happened.
The formal sessions ended with those ABCs. They still continued on of course.
TV commercials were useful for more than getting coffee.
Come sessions were done with me sitting on the sofa in front of the TV. I do hope for the next stage in that Jackie will do voilational flights to me, flights that he initiate on his own.
Jackie might not be a touchy feely kind of bird like Tinkerbell or Riamfada. We will find out for sure later on.
Jackie fruit mash 02 & Jackie mash 02
Middle last week, we decided to get another fridge. One fridge for us and the birdie and the kitties made it difficult to juggle our needs.
That new fridge came just in time as I ran out first with the fruit mash and low on the Jackie/kitty mash.
I came back from the supermarket with what I bought and without what I forgot to buy.
Papaya - 1065 grams
Jackfruit - 242 grams
Persimmons - 924 grams
Chinese pear -721 grams
Banana - 0 grams (forgot)
Chairman Kaga bell peppers (forgot)
I felt bad about the omission of Chairman Kaga bell peppers. But not bad enough to make another trip just to buy those bell peppers. My apologies to those who loved Iron Chef and hope their forgive my unintended insult to Chairman Kaga.
I added a baggie of Jackie/kitty mash batch 1 - 385 grams. I was running out of mash so only a baggie this time.
And with generous dollop of honey, that got blended together into 9 baggies of Jackie fruit mash batch 2.
And with the new fridge with more freezer space, Jackie/kiity mash 02 was cooked on friday yesterday.
It was on 18 November Friday that the first batch of kitty-Jackie mash was made.
The mash all ran out with me on the last baggie yesterday.
But first, a note of thanks to Mike Burton and his memory.
Kitty-Jackie mash is based on Tinkerbell Mash is based on the formula for Mike’s Manna Mash created and given to the world by my good friend Mike Burton. Mike is sadly no longer with us but never will be forgotten as long as people prepare his mash or Tinkerbell Mash.
All this is dedicated to Mike Burton. A friend who left us all too soon and
gave the world Mike's Manna Mash and on which Tinkerbell Mash in all its forms
has been based.
Original Mikes Manna Mash recipe here
The memory of Mike will live on in every bit of Mike's Manna Mash or Tinkerbell
Mash or kitty-Jackie mash regardless of the batch or who made it or feed on it.
Two days before that, the beans and corn were soaked for 8 hours to start the germinating and then drained of all water. They were soaked a few minutes and washed periodically until cooking.
Full complete details of mash cooking should be referred to in

Because of the new fridge, I decided more mash could be done
Kitty-Jackie mash consisted of
1 measure (50 grams) of soybeans
1 measure (50 grams) of kidney beans
1 measure (50 grams) of garbonzo beans
1 measure (50 grams) of pinto beans
2 measure (100 grams) of blackeye beans
2 measure (0 grams) of Great Northern white beans
(I ran out of GNW beans, could not find them in Singpaore on Thursday and doubled the blackeye beans)
1 measure (50 grams) of red beans
1 measure (50 grams) of green beans
1 measure (50 grams) of black beans
1 measure (50 grams) of lima beans
1 measure (50 grams) of butter beans (which looked like lima beans)
1 measure (0 grams)of corn
(I decided to nyet corn )
1 measure (50 grams) of peas
1 measure (120 grams) of human grade groundnuts(peanuts)
1 measure (175 grams) of quinoa
1 measure (175 grams) of brown crushed barley
1 measure (200 grams) of black glutinious rice
1 measure (175 grams) of red rice
1 measure (175grams) of brown rolled oats
1 measure (175 grams) of brown rolled wheat berries
( I decided to use more cereal. Just my choice. I liked crushed or rolled grains )
1 measure (100 grams) of yellow millet
measure (710 grams) of sweet potatoes grated
measure (810 grams) of carrots grated
3 tablespoon of wheat germ
200 grams of dried anchovies
400 grams of mince chicken.
I parboiled the sweet potatoes and carrots for 5 minutes and cooled them for handling. I find grating parboiled sweet potatoes and carrots to be a lot easier.
All the beans & peanuts were brought to boil for about 5 minutes to parboil them. After cooling that, they all went into the blender to liquidise them. They were then placed into pot and water added to allow them to boil nicely and boiled for another 10 minutes or so. Part of that was cooled to add to blender to blend 200 grams of dried anchovies for the protein and the calcium.
Part of that liquidised bean mash soup taken out to mix in the grated sweet potatoes carrots , the chicken mince, 3 tablespoon of wheat germ.
They all got back into the pot and boiled. Just enough water added to allow boiling. Then all the quinoa, millet and cereals were added when boiling was good and strong. Stirred well for a minute or so until it got difficult to stir. Fire turned off and they left to cook themselves.
That got me 9275 grams of Jackie/kitty mash batch 2 into 24 baggies.
If the kitties and birdies do not eat that, I will wring their scrawny necks.
LiBai mash making.
About 300 grams of beef mince, with 200 grams of chicken mince and 150 grams of dried anchovies(for the calcium). That was all done up to the kitty mash formula I wrote about in
Pakistan//Tinkerbell Kitty Mash//Dommie at the beach Ramadhan 2010 //Villa walkabout 2
Instead of the almond and brazil nuts, about 100 grams of human grade groundnuts(peanuts) were used.
