I received words from Claudie a few days ago on 27 May. I had written her name as Claudia instead of Claudie. She is Belgian.

Here is her email to me with photos of that IRN at point of liberation.

"Hello Alishan and Joye;

I left Piogito out yesterday in the afternoon ;;; I had no choice cause he was not eating anymore, I think he was not happy at all in that room hiding... SO i LEFT TO door open while I was watching from my kitchen and he came out very slowly and climbed into the plant ;;; I talking to hem and encouraged hem to go flying ;;;; which eventually he tried but he could not .... oHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH
sO HE want walking to the back of my garden and sat there on the wall;;; I gave hem food and water ( which he did not touch) and put sticks all over the wall for hem to climb from the wall into the trees in case THAt CAT appears......
i told hem to be clever and hide from that nausty cat ..... i CAN NOT FIND HEM ANYMORE so l'ets hope he is out there flying in freedom where he is supposed te be.... while I am sitting here typing to you I am distract by every movement in the garden to see if it is not MY PIOGITO flying around or sitting in the tree.
We will miss hem but are very happy he is free and whish hem to be safe;

Kind regards

* Claudie *

She did her best.

Let us all hope the best for that IRN too.

Last weekend on 28 May, me and my wife went to Sawadi Hotel on Sawadi Beach in our planned excursion to stick my head under water again. For obvious reasons, Riam did not come with us. The plan as I thought was to take a boat to snorkel off Daymaniyat Islands, a protected ocean habitat reputed to have pristine water conditions with coral reefs and fishes and turtles and a thousand and one other delights.

We reached Sawadi Hotel by 9 am as set by my wife to be joined by Dawn and her friend Chris. To be told we need to be there by 8am and to book that a few days ahead and the boat for Daymaniyat islands left already.

So we accepted the other alternative to be boated to Sawadi island a few minutes from Sawadi beach to be dropped off there and collected an hour later by boat.

I still could stick my head underwater. This was better than than place off Shangrila hotel, even if marginally better only.

We had a heat wave here in Muscat lasting a few days.

Folks, the temperature in the shade here was at 54C, yes, fifty four degrees Centigrade. I was talking to a guy in this building and he told me in the desert where the oil rigs were, his men was reporting 57C. I had encountered shade temperature of mid 50C. That was when I worked and lived in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. I never expected mid 50C here in Oman, and neither did the people here expected that.

I felt bad for the plants in my garden. When even my cactus were dying, what hope would one have for the other plants. When I turned on the hose to water the plants, the water was so hot that I might be boiling the plants.

When I drove home for lunch, I opened the window as I smoked in the car. I stuck my hand out of the window and withdrew it in less than a second as I felt a blast furnace on the skin. I had to hold the wheel in position of six thirty and with palms facing upwards. The overhead sun burning down made it not bearable to hold the wheel in ten ten position with the air blasting in from the open windows.

So when you think your summer heat is unbearable, think yourself to be lucky you not in Oman.

Riamfada loved the showers that I gave her on daily basis after our walks. The walks got more and more abbreviated in the current heat wave. I thought of doing away with it but all the beasties looked forward to that so much. The kitties would come home deliberately about that time and waited at the door. Riam would bend and stick her head into the harness and lifted her wings for that harness to be worn. And we all step out of the garden gate as on parade.

I used the water from the hot tap to shower her after the walks. If I use the water from the cold tap, that water would have taken the temperature of the air and would be about 45C. The power to the water heater was turned off a few weeks already. Sadly, the water heater was not located in the villa itself where it could be chilled by the aircond at full blast. Even so, the water from the hot tap, and hence from the water heater, was a few degrees cooler than from the cold tap.

She would then fly to the perch to shake off the water, periodically flying to the ring, to the bars to enjoy the evaporation of that water in the living room. Periodically, she would fly down to my shoulder to rest there for a second and then fly back up to the perch. I think that was her parroty way of telling me she liked the shower. She clearly liked it as I always said loudly to her I giving her a shower and walked with her to the bathroom with her on a stick perch. She would have flown away if she did not like the shower. One day I will wait for her at the shower and call her to fly to me for that shower.

I am happy to report the temperature today got back to normal and low 40C. It felt positively delightful and cool after those brutal days of mid 50C.

You all known me for not ever explicitly giving the URL as to how the harness is made. I always packed that with explanations to training which is vastly more important than how the harness is made. Without the training and the bonding, the harness is not going to be useful.

That is why how to make the harness is embedded with the training.

I repeat.
The most important is the training and the understanding of your bird.
A summary of what was done, as well as explicit details of the harness with many photos how the harness is worn on the bird and how it is done is here
http://shanlung.livejournal.com/8284.html

Yet time and time again, people asked only for harness details and showed total disinterest in the even more vital training and bonding process.

Such as a recent exchange with this forum in Israel
http://www.parrots.co.il/modules.php?name=Forums&file=viewtopic&t=10373&postdays=0&postorder=asc&start=105

I then wrote
"

In the islands of South Pacific, the people there have this strange belief called the ‘ cargo cult’.
During the 2nd World War, America was fighting Japan and the Americans captured and build airfields on the islands of South Pacific. American planes landed and brought huge amount of supplies and food. The Americans gave food and goods to the natives of those islands.

The war ended and the Americans left.

The people of those islands cannot forget the food that they got from the planes. The people then build airfields and buildings and flag poles like what they seen done by the Americans thinking that by doing so, the planes will come back with cargo of food for them.

I was wrong to think that happen only with natives of South Pacific.

"

People who asked and only want to use harness without wanting to understanding the entire process are like those South Pacific islanders who practise the cargo cults.

This is not to say harness is not important at all.

I feel harness is important especially when you have a grey which is very likely to spook.

A couple days ago, we were doing our neighbourhood walk among the villas here. The villa's estate road was separated from the outside road by a low wall of 2 meters height.

There was this mighty BANG, sounded like a big truck hitting a speed bump on the road on other side of the wall. I was startled. My wife was startled. Katie and Dommie ran and ran. Riamfada spooked and flew off my shoulder. The harness and line stopped her after 3 meters. She fluttered to the ground, turned and looked at me, and flew back to my shoulder. If not for the harness, she might have flown to the next district and unable to find her way back to me.

Likewise, 'using' harness without the understanding and training is like South Pacific islanders building airstrip and wondering why planes do not land with cargo for them.

aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa

During those neighbourhood walks, my wife had been trying to take shots and videos of Riam's take offs. That required Riam to face away from me when I called.

Riamfada insisted on turning around on the perch hold by my wife to face me each time. I spend time before teaching Riam to turn on cue by saying 'turn around' as I thought that was the best way for her.

Then when she faced the other way, her flight was so fast to me that my wife had difficulty to focus and follow her . So some videos had Riam flying away from me and out of camera cover and split second later, Riam enter back into camera cover and heading to me. The crucial turn around was missing.

I was also getting to suspect my wife claim of Riam flying backwards.

Then a couple days back when playing with Riam in living room after the walk, I saw that flying backwards of Riam.

Riam was on the ring. I re-hung the ring so ceiling rope was on a corner of the ring (more a square) and the vertical branch weight at the corner immediately below. That was done as Riam hardly perch herself in the ring itself but on top. The ring (more a square) became a very wobbly rhomboid inclining down at 45 degree where Riam liked to perch on. When she landed on the top, the whole thing shifted and spin and wobble at same time that she delighted in.

When she and the ring perch were spinning, I gave her a recall cue when I was only a couple meters away. She leapt off the top backwards, flapped a couple beats backwards, twisted her body towards me and flew and touch down on me ever so softly.

Of course, during such great fanciful flights, neighter wife or camera was around.

Mash batch 5 was made a few days back. Batch 4 was shared between Riam and my neighbour Maya CAG which was why batch 4 ended after just 6 weeks or so. And yes, a pack was given to that IRN.

Some changes were made. I mashed 3/4 of the beans after they were cooked. 1/4 left unmashed. The 3/4 of the sweet potatoes and carrots were shredded and the rest cut to small pieces.

After the final cooking of the rice and cereals, I wrapped a couple of towels around the pot to retain the heat through the night.

Final results were perfect.
