Tinkerbell Legacy - Living with a flying parrot

HOMO SAPIENS NON URINAT IN VENTUM

We enjoyed Amsterdam from the moment we got there. Muscat had temperature of mid 30C to low 40C when we left. Amsterdam was delightfully chilly at 22++C during the times when we were there.

It was over 10 years ago that I was in Amsterdam. Events over the years conspired to keep me from there. Such as Tinkerbell that I spend lots of my leave over. Not that I mind it at all. You know how much I enjoyed Taiwan, my friends there, the ambience and all that you can see from my reports.

All said, Amsterdam was so wonderful a city.that I know I will be back there often again. Not wait another ten years.

My thoughts of being there for 5 days followed by visits to Ypres, Somme, Verdun changed very rapidly. Just wandering around Amsterdam, eating raw herrings, walking by the canals or seating in canal boats as they slowly move along, checking out flower market and the parks, reading George Martin and time just went by. Van Gogh museum was enjoyed as per my ritual in my dozen visits there and the Night Watch in the Rijks Museum. The only difference after 10 years was that the que became so much longer this time.

It was interesting that Amsterdam is now smoke free. Smoke all you want in coffee shops , as long as it is not tobacco.

In my wandering there, I came to this Max Euwe Plaza. Max was a world chess champion in 1935 and he was from Amsterdam. The back entrance to Max Euwe Plaza had this huge latin words written on it.

"HOMO SAPIENS NON URINAT IN VENTUM"

IMG_1815

The photo above missed out the word "HOMO" of the entire phrase "HOMO SAPIENS NON URINAT IN VENTUM"

Not withstanding I do not know Latin, I guessed it was to admonish people not to pee there. It was later when we got back that we found the translation was WISE MEN SHOULD NOT PEE INTO THE WIND. Maybe an admonishment on chess players on why we waste so much time and energy playing chess.

This plaza had a huge chess set with pieces that reached my thigh. More important was that there were lots of people who played and love to watch the game.

I was pretty good. And I won spectacularly . And the blunders I made were breath taking to the people there. To show them how to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory.

That discovery of Max Euwe Plaza decided that we would spend all our time in Amsterdam.

The restaurants were fabulous. Our main problem was what should we have for breakfast that would allow us to have enough space in the stomach for a good lunch and another good dinner. Chinese restaurants, Italian restaurants, Argentinian restaurants, Dutch restaurants were on our hit list. We had enough of Paki/Indian/Lebanese restaurants knowing we could get back to that in Muscat.

Wondering why Spinoza had all the birds and parrots on him

I google and found those were rose ringed parakeets, from

It was a very wonderful relaxed 2 weeks we spend there, getting back just a couple days ago. And yes, I came back with a Dremel tool to grind Riamfada's claws into little nubs.

We came back into the Muscat airport and thought the car was stolen. In the sticky heat, we searched and searched and eventually found the car parked in another car park with great relief.

We got back home late at night 26 Jul 09 to find Riamfada waking up as I entered her room. Only a fifth of the water for her was gone. The sunflower seeds left in her room were largely uneaten. I must have left her 2 months supply for that 10 days we were away. I called for the kitties, but they did not turn up that night

The kitties came back early the next morning. Dommie missed my wife so much that for two days after that, he did nothing but stuck close to her not wanting her out of his sight.

Maid Maria took good care of all of them, feeding mash to Riam daily and kipples to the kitties.

So normal life in Muscat resumed. With neighbourhood walks in the evenings.

I had not taken good care of the first rod/reel. I dropped it a few times, actually more than just a few times on the floor. Might have been at least a dozen times. I thought it was rugged as it was ok the first few times.

But on 30th July, as I was reeling the line in, the spindle that hold the reel to the rod broke to my shock. The last few days I was hunting for super expoxy glue hoping to repair that.

The bamboo work of art rod/reel had to be used in earnest.

moccasinlanding in comment to my last entry offered to send me VET WRAP. Thank you very much for that offer and the thought. I could not wait for that and had to wrap rope and twine about the bamboo work of art rod/reel.

Believe me! I will take a lot more care not to drop the rod/reel this time unlike what I did with that first one.

Photos will be uploaded in due course that you can see how that lovely work of art got massacred by me.

Yesterday was a lovely evening when we went for our neighbourhood walk. It was a windy day too. Riam flew to me immediately on cue in a lane with low walls. She was fine , and then a gust of wind caught a bed sheet hanging out to dry making it flapped and bellow out. Spooking Riam such that she flew off my shoulder. Again the line brought her to a stop in a few meters.

I do look sometimes at the hits on my Livejournal and I noticed an old URL that was read. I checked back into it and was intrigued at the conversations I have had in 2005 on flying our parrots with Milko , food management and on telemetry.

You might find it interesting and food for thoughts

http://shanlung.livejournal.com/21917.html
"some recent letters on free flying our parrots (food management to get stronger recalls)"

I found I changed a little since then.

I am now actively looking into telemetry systems for Riamfada to allow her to fly freely outdoors.

I seen lots of hits on this page, perhaps from a search for the title.

Riamfada is doing free flights as well in areas that I felt are safe enough for us to do that after a year of flights in harness and leash.

(Anonymous)
Hi Shanlung and Joy! Looks like a cool trip! We are going to Europe for a couple weeks next month including Amsterdam, will keep an eye out for wild IRNs. Looking forward to the coffee houses! Tara

Thanks for the hint about parrots and stuff on Spinoza's statue!

:-)

Say hi to Spinoza for me when you are there.
And give anyone of the parrots on him a headrub too.

:-)

To get the real flavor of Homo Sapiens non Urinat in Ventum, how about this translation:

A man with any brains at all does not piss into the wind.
